He came to New York City after graduation and made his theatrical debut as a stand-up comic at the Apollo Theater, but did not find much success. He persisted, eventually establishing a reputation for himself in the comedy world, and made his film debut as “Ahchu” in “Robin Hood: Men in Tights”. He was offered a role in the 1994 film “Forrest Gump”, but declined because he felt the film would not work. In the same year, he also appeared as a supporting character in the film “Getting In”.

Along with Jim Breuer, he appeared in the 1995 season of the American sitcom “Home Improvement”. The pair were given lead roles in the sitcom “Buddies” because of their popularity on TV. Jim was let go, however, and the show never really took off with an audience.

He co-starred in the 1996 hit film “The Nutty Professor” with Eddie Murphy, who is also his protégé and inspiration. He made a brief appearance on “Con Air” in 1997 before landing a significant role in “Half-Baked” the following year. Following the success of “Half-Baked”, she was cast opposite Tom Hanks in the film “You’ve Got Mail” and made an appearance on an episode of “The Larry Sanders Show”.
